Wilbur Training Ride

There is a reason that the Wilbur route is one of the most popular training rides among Indy's top riders. There simply isn't any other route near Indy that features the same long open roads, low traffic, and varied terrain. The ride starts and finishes on what can seem like endless flats. The meat of the ride features four challenging sustained climbs broken up by a long straight section of rollers. Maybe best of all is that there is a very conveniently located convenience store at the turn around point.

Out and back from Southwestway park is 45 miles. Perfect for a rigorous 2.5-3 hr workout. If you start from the middle of Indy count on 80+ miles and 5hrs. If you are thinking of taking on this fun but challenging ride keep two things in mine. 1.) Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition. Eat a good breakfast with plenty of carbs and a little protein. Then keep eating steadily throughout the ride. If you run out of fuel its a long way back. 2.) Don't leave it all on the first hill, or taking monster pulls on the flats heading out. You have plenty of time to get your heart rate up and punish your legs. Save some for the ride home. Take a look at the map below. There are a variety of ways to get to Southwestway Park through downtown Indy, but once you are there this is the route. Its pretty simple, out and back.
