Saturday's Backyard Cross in Bargersville, IN was fantastic. This is a hidden gem that needs to be exposed. It's too bad that there were not more racers competing because Speeway Wheelmen's Scott Bond set up one heck of a course. Recent rains had softened up this course that was already well prepared. It featured some challenging conbinations of turns, a nice downhill, a 180 degree hillside turn that was much tougher than it looked, a fallen log barrier and plenty of off camber terrain. This course could host a big regional event in my opinion if more people knew about it, and if they dont build houses on it.
Now, on to race results. Justin Yoder, Ryan Elpers and John Hartman all had solid rides in the Cat4 race. Unfortunately it was dominated by a sandbagger from Marian University. It was Ryan's first cross race. Speaking with Ryan after the race he remarked about some of the challenging terrain, "it was like showing up to class and there was quiz I didn't study for." In the Elite race Cory Swihart finished 7th among a very talented field. Dustin Jones finished 4th in his first cross race since upgrading to Cat3. Crossing the line with two to go, Dustin was overtaken by a chasing rider from Speedway Wheelmen. However, he maintained his composure and launched a well timed attack midway through the final lap to catch and eventually make the pass to reclaim 4th at the finish.
